Default Help! Not sure if I can breast feed!

    Hello everyone!

I'm due May 13th, and have a boy that will be 3 next month. I never breast fed with him, I was terrified. Anyway, I used to have my nipples pierced, and took them out while pregnant with my first son. I've started then to get a white thick discharge from them, even after milk was gone. It's sort of a smelly discharge, exactly like the one you would get from your earlobe when you haven't had an earrings in for a while. It doesn't hurt, it's not yellow or green, just thick and white. I've emailed la leche league and women never had problems breast feeding, but they havn't a clue about the discharge. Anyone ever have this problem? I really want to breast feed and now I' m not sure if I can

I even asked my OB and he didnt have a clue, and I wouldn't knwo what doctor to go too, help please!

Well, I don't know about the discharge, but I do know you can breastfeed after piercings.

I had both of mine pierced and took them out, I bf my DS for 14 months.

There is no evidence to suggest that a woman's pierced nipples will have any effect on her ability to breastfeed.

ETA: The "discharge" you were seeing was probably colostrum. I have one side of one piercing that didn't heal over clean and when I was pg I could squeeze colostrum out of it. Same with milk. I figure its unseen to the naked eye so 1) who cares and 2) faster access for baby!!

For me, the pregnancy colostrum was thin and milky, not thick and definately did not smell. Its worth getting it checked by a Dr IMO

    Congrats on baby #2!

I had a nipple piercing that I removed years ago, but it healed up with no problem. I was always afraid that I would not be able to breastfeed, but cut to 7 years later and I have had no problems. Not sure about the discharge though -- I would get a 2nd opinion from another MD, perhaps a breast specialist? You also have quite some time before you are due, so I am sure whatever it is will be worked out in time. Good luck....and CONGRATULATIONS!

I used to have my nips pierced too, and I know exactly what you're talking about. I do know from personal experience that nipple piercings take a long time to close up, and that any piercing sheds dead skin cells on the inside of it, meaning along the puncture, and that can come out the openings and look and smelly nasty. But, you should get it checked again to make sure it's not infected.

That LLL page the pp posted is great.

I second both of those statements!! probably nothing to worry about, but it's better to be safe than sorry i suppose.

I have been nursing for 2.5 years with one ex-pierce nipple. It never caused me any problems. I also used to get that discharge, before I started nursing (I took it out while I was pg). I get it from my belly button piercing hole (which I also took out) and the holes in my ears that I don't use anymore. Oh, and my old lip piercing LOL. It does smell really weird, and it's thick and white. But, with constant nursing, it doesn't happen to my nipple anymore. I'm sure when I stop, it will happen again. Like PP said, it's the buildup of dead skin cells and the like. Not that you shouldn't rule out infection! Always good. But yep! Me too

I know I'm not a physician so if you are still concerned I agree with other people who have recommended that you see a health professional. You may be able to allay your fears if you have a free health information service in your area. I know that here there is an advice line you can phone up... it might be worth looking into, to see if you have something like that in your area?

That being said, the discharge you are getting sounds to me like a mixture of sebum or natural skin oil (basically the same sort of white discharge that you can get in things like ingrown hairs and blackheads) and skin. It's quite normal but it can smell kinda cheesy.. ironically (and sorry if anyone finds the analogy gross) it's pretty much the same sort of thing as smegma (the discharge that can collect under the foreskin of a penis).
