Red face baby led sight? solids? sleep? selfish mama?

do any of you know the sight to "baby led" feeding? I saw it mentioned once, but now I can't find it online.

    Question:
We have made the decision to wait until the boy is 6 months until we introduce solids. However, he is only 4 months now and already he's staring at us while we eat and grabbing at food. Sometimes I question waiting and wonder if we should introduce something earlier.

OR --- Is it just that he's developing his visual and coordination skills, hence, he's following our movements and grabbing at stuff (not knowing it's food, and not really interested in eating, just grabbing).

Did you wait until 6 month? Later?

On top of that, our boy is a terribly wakeful sleeper. Doesn't sleep, in other words. (I swear I need more sleep than him, and he's a baby.) With that in mind, I (ah, I hate to admit this) wonder if giving him solids once in a while would help him sleep--with a fuller belly.
    No.
See, as soon as I write it, I decide against it.

Do any of you mamas have similar questions? Slight desires to introduce solids earlier? Am I just being selfish?

Here are the two sites that most people use as references for baby lead solids (note - they are British and in British English weaning = starting solids and does not mean ending breastfeeding):

    http://babyledweaning.blogware.com/blog

    http://www.borstvoeding.com/voedseli...uidelines.html

I really like the kellymom.com info on when baby is ready to start solids:

    http://kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/delay-solids.html
    http://kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/solids-when.html

And sorry - solids are not likely to help baby with sleeping through the night.

    Hope this helps!

    thanks, ladies.
I don't expect we'll feed him anything before 6 months.
I guess sometimes I just need to get the "almost too excited, want to feed now" out of my system.

Hi- firstly, you're not being selfish at all- the baby isn't the only one with needs. And secondly, I think you kind of answered your own question about baby learning to co-ordinate and watching you eat. My girl is seven months now, and she had been watching us eat intently from about four months, and grabbing at food (or plates!) from a little later. But we hung on until she was six months (and two days ), and when we first gave her solids, she spat it back out again! That's the surest way, apparently, to tell whether a baby is ready. If the food goes in (whether under baby's own control, as in BLW, or on a spoon or adult finger), and is then pushed back out again, then baby isn't ready. When baby IS ready, he/she will have gained the coordination to manoevre the food to the back of the mouth and to swallow.
I think there is often a view that once you "start" solids, then that's it. But it needn't be- why not try- and if baby isn't ready, then leave it a week, or two, or whatever, and try again. But it is thought that most babies are really not developmentally really ready to manage solids until about the middle of their first year, so four months is actually a bit unlikely.
As for BLW, I can't tell you about a web site, but the basics are simple- stick to non-allergenic things (like no wheat, dairy, citrus, tomatoes, nuts and so on- and certainly nothing with added salt or sugar at all) particularly if there are any allergies in the family, and give bits of foood roughly the size and shape of an adult finger (carrot batons, broccolli florets, chunks of squash, lightly poached pear or apple etc. are ideal). The baby will then be in control of what he takes. But if you're going to stick strictly to this, be prepared to take criticism, particularly from older generations, because at first, baby will take a lot less than a baby on spooned purees might have.

    Good luck!

Yeah, my son has been eating solids for about a month and a half and I can tell you, it doesn't do anything for sleep!

I know some may strongly disagree, but I believe in following what your baby tells you. If you feel your baby is ready and the ped gives the go ahead, I don't think this is a bad thing. Is your little one holding their head up well? When you put your LO on their stomach do they push up their shoulders and hold their head up well? My ped gave us the go ahead when LO was 4 months old. We didn't start then because my husband and I didn't feel our LO was ready yet. We started at about 5 1/2 months because that's when he started showing an interest in eating solids. Yes, our ped was peeved at the 6 month appointment that we didn't do what she told us to do, but we knew we made the right choice! I'd follow your LO and when they're ready! HTH!

I agree with the pps. With my first, we started at 5 1/2 months. She thrust the food back out with her tongue, but enjoyed the activity. So we just tried here and there maybe 4 times per week until, after she was 6 mos. she was able to maneuver the food to the back of her mouth properly and swallow. With my second, I waited until after 6 mos. It was funny, because when I gave her the first bite, she swallowed it immediately and was eagerly waiting for another! It made me wonder for a minute if I waited too long
Each baby is different. Follow your baby's cues and have fun!
