I was told to start with 2 tbsp of baby cereal (which is fortified with iron). You add enough breastmilk to make it about the consistency of applesauce to start with. Once your lo gets the hang of that you can start working your way up to 3oz (6 tbsp) 3 times a day. One of mine didn't really like the baby cereal but loves it when I make it from scratch.

Neither of my girls liked the rice cereal, but both really dug the oatmeal, which is also iron fortified.

The iron fortification of baby cereal is very low.....an oz of dry cereal has 7% of the iron a baby needs.....so I don´t think baby cereal is "the most important iron source". Breastmilk is still the most important source of iron.

I agree, but it is a source for some additional iron and works well to introduce solids if OP wants to go this route.

Although it does seem to contain a lot of iron, baby cereals iron is in a form that is poorly absorbed by baby. We did use cereal, but it was whole organic oats, cooked. It still has a texture, to avoid that puree mush texture. If you're concerned about iron, offer it with a vitamin C source (we offer mango or watermelon). The vitamin C helps the iron be absorbed. Also, dairy will do the opposite, so try not to offer dairy and iron together.
