Default loss of milk in breastfeeding

I am studying to be a doula, and I have become passioante about breastfeeding. I have two friends who have sons 8 mo 7 mo and mine is 5 1/2 mo. my baby is breastfeedingsine, and loves oto eat a little bit of veggies at night, but no ceareal and no realy needfor veggies. these two friend are amazed. the one with the 8 mo sstopped nursing at 3 months because she said that she ran out of milk because her baby ate too much and she didn't have enough to satisfy him. the one with the 7 mo old said the same thing, but she still breastfeeds but he's been on 3 meals a day since he was 3 monnths old (cereal, veggies, fruit ect.) my question is and i really need a scientific answer...

is it possible for a mother to not have enough milk for her baby? is it possible that a baby can be soo hungry that mom can't satisfy him, and is it possible for a mothers milk to dry up if you are breastfeeding exclusively?

This are some thread that talk about the subject, it's very rare for somebody to have a true low milk supply, and I'm not talking about those mother that encounter problems at the begining of their relationship.
