    Default Latching Issues... too late?

Is it too late to teach my 11 day old to latch correctly? It seems like he is not taking in the lower part of my areola (or sticking his bottom lip out). I am bleeding, scabbed, sore... Please help!

No. It is NEVER too late! My LO made me so sore I literally cringed at the thought of her latching on. I knew she was getting milk, but gosh it hurt...but with time and patience, things eventually got better...my nipples healed and my LO's latch improved on its own! Now at 5 months old, she's a pro! BF is SO Easy! I love it! Have never even given her a bottle! This IS the best experience for us! Good Luck! It WILL Improve! You could also call a lactation consultant or even contact your local llli leader if things get too rough!

Is your LO opening wide to latch? That was part of my problem..LO would try to latch without opening her mouth wide enough! Check out www.kellymom.com for some latch correction information and tips!

its never too late... my lo had a problem too, i had to basically aim my nipple towards his nose to get him open wide

I think his chin is too far back~ like he has an overbite. I've tried using my finger to pull out his bottom lip, but it just won't work. Any ideas on what to do about this lower jaw? (he's medically fine)

Thanks for the quick replies everyone!!!

I would say it is definitely not too late! If he is only still nursing (not taking a bottle), even better. Women have nursed for a month and gotten very sore nipples to have things turn around when they learned how to latch the baby correctly. My daughter was killing my nipples, and when she was 4 days old, I found a lactation consultant who came to my house and showed me how to latch her correctly. It made all the difference and my nipples were back to normal within a week. I also had the lactation specialist come back about a week ago because my dd was fighting me at the breast (and not fussy any other time). I found out she didn't like the way I was holding my breast when I latched her on (it was hard for her to get a good latch). I changed my technique and things have been going worlds better since then. Don't give up, it's still early in the game! Many people have problems at first! Just think positively, be persistent, and talk to people who have experience breastfeeding! Good luck!!
