    Default Vitamin D for toddler?

Hmmm ... any references about whether or not a LO over one year old needs to take Vitamin D supplements?

DS is almost 15 mo old and isn't eating any dairy (he's allergic).

A dietitian just told me that DS needs Vitamin D supplements and that there's been an increase in ricketts (!) recently. Most cow milk is fortified with Vitamin D.

The LLLI page talks about vitamin D for LO up to 6 mo: http://www.llli.org/FAQ/vitamin.html

The Kellymom info doesn't indicate the age of the LO:

    Hi there.
Our bodies manufacture vit. D when we're out in the sun. I don't have a link but I remember that it's very little exposure to just hands and face each day that is sufficient. If you have your DS outside to play some each day, then he's prob. fine. Also, I'm sure there are other sources of vit. D in foods as was mentioned above.

No worries, and I heard too that rickets rates went up mainly in babies who were dark skinned and in those whose mothers didn't drink fortified milk. That tells me that we prob. have that vit. in our bm, and as for dark skinned kids, the story went that it takes them longer in the sun to make vit. D and too many people are staying inside and/or blocking the sun fanatically.

    HTH, take care,
