Please Help! I want to know if I have any hope of my milk supply increasing I have been told so many things. I really want this to work!
I am a new mom and so new to BFing. My little man is 15 days old he was born 8lbs. We got off to a slow start because his blood sugar upon birth was too low to BF, according to the hospital (below 30), and for the first 24 hrs he was in a special care nursury where they would not allow me to BF for fear of lowering his sugar more and he recieved and IV as well as a bottle of 2oz of formula every two hours - so i pumped 6 times with the hospital pump never getting more than a couple drops of colustrum. then I got him and tried BF every time he was hungry the hospital was still monitoring his sugar and so I had to continue to supplement his bfing sessions with formula. It was difficult to learn to position him and we got home on the third day which is when I committed to feeding him around the clock only BM when ever he wanted - there where times he was eating for 4 hours with a few breaks 15 -20 min.
He went to the pediatrician on the 5th day after birth when he was weighed he had lost weight and weighed 7lbs 5 oz. the doctors wanted to see him again on monday and he lost even more weight 7lbs 3oz and so they encouraged me to supplement until my milk came in - so I did for fear of hurting my son who was not having the appropriate poop diapers (some days zero) then his weight returned to 7lbs 5 oz so the doc said cut back on formula now so I did and he lost weight again in the mean time my son was getting very frustrated at the nipple and his nursing sessions would always take a long time - slow eater I guess. So now that his weight had been fluctuating and it was obvious he was not going to be anywhere close to returning to his birthweight by 2 wks or possibly 3 wks. I started exclusively pumping on Sunday 5/27 to get more sessions (10-12) instead of BFing (7-8) naturally. I tried to do both and that didn't work I was feeding all day long without any help around I barely had enough time to use the restroom or eat. Now that I am pumping I am getting about 8oz total from my double electric pump (works great still not enough milk) and I am supplementing until his little hearts content - I've stopped keeping track of how much formula because it was depressing he seems to have gotten hungrier over the past couple days. We go for another weight check tomorrow I know his is gaining so I am not worried about that I can see it in his face and body.
so here we are Chris last weight check slightly up - good
my milk supply - still too low
and we are wondering if we have permanently ruined our chances for increasing my milk supply to have him 100% BF.
Please help - I really want to do this for my son.
