Default How long do you pump?

I've been pumping for my 13 month old since she was born. She has a lot of health issues and a feeding tube, so pumping is my only option. It takes FOREVER for one session, lasting about 40 mins. Does anyone else take this long? I tend to produce really fast at the beginning, then it tapers off, then it picks up again before I stop. I'm not sure what is happening. I massage while I pump. My time is so limited caring for a chronically ill child and taking care of my 3.5 year old, not to mention the house. Just wondering if I could cut down the time of these sessions.

    Thanks!

You're not alone. I typically pump about 30 minutes, sometimes a little more. It just takes that long, I don't know why. My left breast usually finishes in much less time. At least I can pump hands-free and it is mostly at work. Kudos to you for managing to exclusively pump for 13 months and take care of two children. Good luck!

It is very normal to have several let-downs while pumping ... hence the flow increase after it has slowed down. I sometimes can get 3-5 of them. In general, I pump for about 10-20 minutes to get 6-10oz (depending on the time of day). It takes me a lot longer in the mornings when I pump 13-14oz (about 15-25 mins).

What kind of pump are you using? Is it a double electric?

Question Re: How long do you pump?

Is that 6-10oz total from both breast or only one?

I rented the Medela symphony pump. My production is going way down fast and I don't know why. Probably stress. I used to get 9 oz, now only 3-5. I'm doing herbal teas, increasing # sessions per day, drinking lots. I don't know what to do. We've tried every formula for supplementation and all make her sick. It's like my body knows she's not nursing and refusing to make milk! Help!!!!!

I'm sorry...is it maybe the pumps you are using? I only had trouble before I had the Medela Pump In Style. I tried other pumps but they just didn't work at all. This one I get about 7 oz. in about 5 minutes. My let-down is really fast for some reason. Now, the gal I work with her pump session is about 30 mins. and we have the same pump so I don't know.

Have you been using the same pump for the whole 13 mos? They tend to lose their efficiency after awhile. Maybe you can trade it in.

I was told that the Symphony is the Cadilac of pumps. It's what I used when my daughter was hospitalized and it's much better than the old pump in style I had. I rented this one in Jan.

It sounds like your milk supply is dropping. Have you cut back on how often you pump or made any other changes? Do you nurse baby at home or give bottles?

I found this article about increasing milk supply while pumping. Let us know what you find that works for you!! http://www.lalecheleague.org/NB/NBJulAug96p118.html

I'm not able to nurse my baby at all because of chronic health issues. She's about to have her 2nd open heart surgery. The only thing I can attribute my dwindling supply is that I've pumping for 13 months, 11 of which with no nursing. I also think fatigue from caring for her and stress are big factors. Thanks so much for the tips. There are some things I haven't tried yet, but will!!!!
