Let us know what the results are! Can your DCPs give her things like beans and watermelon as well? Those are really good, iron-rich, child-friendly foods.

    The results are in.
BTW She was born at full term but she had jaundice and wasnt allowed to come home til the 10th.
When she was admitted into the hospital her levels were at 8. The specialist says for her age normal range is approx 11.5. Her levels are now showing at 10.8.

She wants me to continue with the diet as described before and the iron supplements for 6 more weeks.

I am so grateful to have this site to speak to other mothers. Its difficult when family members take it personal, feeling that I am taking a strangers word over theirs. None have experienced breastfeeding and the rollercoaster of emotions that come with it.

And funny this is that is their point sometime. If you gave her formula you wouldn't be ....blah blahh you would get sleep... blah blah etc.

Now I am still stuck with bringing my pumping levels back to before. I am only pumping 21 to 28 ozs a day. I have been renting an Egnell Lact E for the past 3 weeks and it still doesnt seem to be helping.

    My never ending battle continues

Thanks again for so much support and information for my family.

Since your baby is over 1 year old, she doesn't need that much BM. She will do just fine with 16-24oz per day if she is eating lots of solids. So don't get stressed about pumping output.

That's wonderful!!!! You're almost there!!!! I'm so glad she's feeling better. And I agree about the quantities of BM -- sounds like you're pumping plenty, especially since you really want to concentrate now on helping her to eat more solids with naturally occurring iron. That's why I stopped nursing before solid meals at about 12-13 months, so DS would have more of an appetite for solids, although it is a slow process and they can be pretty finicky at this age. Now at 21 months we're down to nursing just mornings and nights. In any case, congrats on your hard work pumping and on helping your daughter get her energy back!

In most cases, I would say agree with the people in being angry at the Dr, but in this case the Dr. might have a point. I don't think you should follow the diet the Dr laid out, because I really don't like formula, but I think it might be time to introduce more food into your babies diet. After 1 yr breastmilk doesn't have all the iron your baby needs. That's what I think your Dr probably meant by "This is what happens when a baby eats only breastmilk."
