My LO is 6 mos and I haven't started yet. I figure I will start before he turns 7 mos, but that all depends on whether or not he is interested.

My baby was already showing signs that he was ready for food at around 4 months, but I waited a bit longer and started at around 5 months..

I started both of mine at 4 months. I am just staying away from high allergy foods like dairy, wheat, strawberries, shellfish, etc.

I started mine on solids at 6 months but he wasn't ready so I'm waiting a little longer.

We started trying some solids ~6 mos. He didn't start actually eating any significant quantity until he was 14 mos. The AAP recc that babies be exclusively BF for at least the first 6 mos. Solids are not nutritionally necessary in the 1st year. Offering food is more for exploration and fun before that time.

my last two babies were about 9-12 months old before they started much more then a few bites here and there.
Kelly moms has good info on why to delay:

With my first, I wanted to switch him off zantax and on to a different med - it needed to be mixed with food or juice - well he didn't take a bottle so I mixed it with applesauce starting at 4 months. I just did applesauce until the 6 month mark.

My second I started on cereals at 5 months + 1 week.

My third started at 5 months. I was going to hold off longer but he really had a high interest in solids. And as a baby he ate more meals of solids sooner than my other 2 had.

I still view 6 months as ideal, but it was clear my kids were ready sooner.

The Seven Standards of ecological breastfeeding: (1) exclusive breasfeeding for the first 6 months (2) pacify baby at your breast (3) don't use bottles and pacifiers (4) co-sleep for night feedings (5) take a nursing nap (6) nurse frequently day and night; avoiding schedules (7) avoid practices that restrict nursing or separates you from your baby. The average return of menstruation for ecological breastfeeding mothers is between 14 and 15 months.

Right around 6 months for us, though thanks to grandpa she had been taking little bites of things occasionally since about 2 weeks old .

DD is 8 months old & still shows no interest in solids. No rush for us.
