Default 13 Months - How Much?

Ladies help me out here. K is 13 months and so far has had everything we've had (except honey). She loves solids and will cry for a piece of whatever we are having. Dinner goes like this: DH and I eat fix a plate. I cut up a portion for her and put it on the tray of her high chair. She will try everything, but will not finish the portion.

By portion I mean small. For instances, tonight we had shrimp and polenta (LLL Ironchef!). I cut up, one shrimp and a few bites of polenta and tomato. She has three pieces of that one shrimp and a couple bites of tomato and that's it.

Shouldn't she be eating more? She still nurses like a champ, all night, but I fear that she's not getting enough solids. TIA

Exactly, missy is not getting any lighter, but she seems to be slimming down..I just want to make sure.

Same here... Kali eats so little solid food. She went to the doctor today for her cold, and she weighs 23 lbs. I think that she has only gained 2 lbs. since her 9 month, so she is definitely slowing down on the weight gain. Aren't they only supposed to gain 5-7 lbs. in the second year? Or did I mis-read that somewhere?

I would like to know about this too. My daughter still toothless at 12 months (I can see the teeth are going out a little bit). Giving a solid food to her is a challenge for me. She doesnt want soupy food. She wants more textured food but without teeth I dont have many options. She loves cherios at this point.

She nurses a lot still. But I am concerned whether she will have enough nutrition or not.

Kim, I think you're right. The peds did say that at her 12 month. Just seems that interest is fleeting, kwim?

melsamom, you can still offer her soft textured stuff even without teeth. The gums are harder than you think and they can still "chew". Just monitor her with things if you're worried.

I wouldn't worry too much at 13 mo. We just had this discussion at our last LLL meeting. Sometimes they are preventing themselves from food allergies. Do you have any in your family? If she's still nursing and happy I wouldn't worry about it yet! Just keep offering healthy options and let her decide...

On the teeth, just want to second what pp said.. they don't need teeth to eat a variety of food. Think about this; You don't chew with your front teeth anyways, except for maybe corn on the cob and a few other foods... so that would mean kids couldn't start eating solids until they get their back teeth, which doesn't happen for a while.

    The book "Toddler 411" says:

Toddlers eat about one quarter of an adult serving size.

one serving of meat = 4 marbles
one serving of fruits / veggies = 3 dominoes
one serving of cooked pasta / rice = a ping pong ball
one serving of cheese = 2 dice
one serving of juice = a shot glass

Wow, that really puts serving size into perspective! I think that Kali does eat a pretty fair amount, according to these comparisons! Maybe not every meal, but definitely once a day. Thanks!

Wow! Connor eats so much more than this!! However, he's always been "underweight", whatever that means. He'll eat a few ping pong balls worth of meat in one sitting, 1/2 cup of fruit (or more! I hate it when my mom give him too much fruit! He wont eat anything else), a few ping pong balls for pasta and waaaaay more than 2 dice worth of cheese!!

Eat likes a kid, not a toddler!
