    Default Not Gaining Weight

My LO is 4 weeks old. She has only gained about an oz. We do lots of travelling so I have seen two different peds and they don't seem worried. I bf when ever she wants but it usualling lasts only about 5 mins each time. I change sides and keep trying. Sometimes she will bf for 15-20 mins. I have triied to pump and I can't get more than about an oz.

Please let me know if you have any ideas that would help.

    Thanks a million.

The first thing I would check is the amount of wet/poop diapers. How many is she having? That will help you figure out if she is getting enough.

Try block feeding. That is when you set a block time to use one breast. For example from 6am -8am left breast 8am-10am right breast. This way you can make sure your lo is getting hindmilk (more fat)...

maybe you can make an appt with a LC so they can weigh her (in grams) before and after one of her feedings. That way you will know how many ounces she is eating in a normal feeding. Did she at least gain back the weight she lost in the hospital? I will also add about the wet/poopy diapers, make sure she has enough each day. To make it easy put 6 diapers out in your changing area and use those at each diaper change. That's what I do and it makes it much easier and I don't lose count.

My daughter eats just like yours. Sometimes she will eat for 5 minutes and pull away and then wont latch back on and other times she eats for 20 mins. I too worry that my daughter is not eating enough but I guess this is the most common concern of breastfeeding moms.

how much weight did baby loose at birth?
    whats her weight now?
    How often is she nursing?
    What are thoose nursings like.
babies that are not gaining weigth should be watched carefully by the doctor.
has the baby been checked for jJaundice this can cause slow weight gain and feeding problems

breastcompressions can help with weight gain

    WEIGHT GAIN:
If baby is gaining well on mom’s milk alone, then baby is getting enough. A 5-7% weight loss during the first 3-4 days after birth is normal. Baby should regain birth weight by 2 weeks. Once mom’s milk comes in, average weight gain is 6 oz/week. If these goals are not met, call your lactation consultant. More on weight gain.
WET DIAPERS: 5 - 6+ sopping wet diapers per day (after 1st week).
Expect one wet diaper on day one, increasing to 5-6 by one week. To feel what a sufficiently wet diaper is like, pour 3 tablespoons (45 mL) of water into a clean diaper (if baby wets more often, then the amount of urine per diaper may be less). Urine should be pale and mild smelling.
DIRTY DIAPERS: 3 – 4+ dirty diapers per day (after day 4).
Stools should be yellow (no meconium) by day 5 and the size of a US quarter (2.5 cm) or larger. The normal stool of a breastfed baby is usually yellow and is loose (soft to watery, may be seedy or curdy). More on infant stooling.
OTHER POSITIVE SIGNS: After a feeding, mom’s breast feels softer and baby seems reasonably content. Baby is alert, active and meeting developmental milestones

I told the doctor about her only feeding about 5 mins and then trying again. He told me to switch each time so she could get the good milk. But I think I will try the block feeding it really makes sense.

As for how many poops/pees? She has about 4-5 poops and not sure how many pees. I can never really tell in diapers they are all made to be so dry. I am a first time mom so that probably sounds really stupid.

Also, as I said we travel lots. How hard is it to find a lactation consultant to talk to? The one I talked to in the hospital wasn't really nice. I only saw her once and didn't have alot of questions but she was kinda distant, like she didn't want to be there.

I don't know what I would do if this forum wasn't here.

    Thanks again.
