Default Thinking ahead with solids and the BLS approach few ?

my baby is only three months old, we wont be starting solids for a while. I am interested in the bls approach. any advice/dislikes. I want so info to share with MIL about benefits and such(she drives me nuts with this sort of thing she thinks the baby should already be on cereal) Its funny I just got a whole load of coupons from gerber...convenient. Anywho just wondering how it works and if you started at 6 months ect!

Cons: messy because food falls down around baby, you have to make a conscious effort to plan meals with foods that baby can eat

Pros: baby has fun exploring new textures, no extra prep, baby likes to eat what you are eating anyway, baby eats while you eat, baby stops when they are full

We started around 6.5 months, but nothing actually got into her mouth until about 7 But now DD is a master of fruits! I really like that she is an independent eater. I think that is good for her psychological development, especially when she is eating like the rest of the family at mealtime.

And I forgot to say that the biggest pro is that she eats all WHOLE FOODS, nothing processed, salted, sugared, or preserved. That is super important for our LOs long term eating habits and health. IMHO, packaged stuff is a convenience, but a meal should be made of real food, pureed or not.

(Ok, I'm stepping off my soap box now. )

I'm glad this post is here. Can anyone provide any good links about BLS? I would like to start researching solids too, 6 months will come up fast with Logan.

ok - some pros & cons that I wrote up for a friend several months ago

Here's my take on the baby led approach to solids so far:
    PROS:
    - seems more natural to let baby eat at his / her own pace and interest
    - self feeding also seems to help with dexterity and fine motor control (picking up small objects)
    - will hopefully help make DS an adventurous eater who enjoys food & eating
    - will hopefully help avoid some of the food power struggles parents often have with kids
    - DS will be able to eat most of what we're eating (with some minor modifications)
    - don't need to make or buy pureed food

    CONS:
    - self-feeding is slow and very messy
    - need to realize that baby, table, and floor (and you) will probably all be covered in food
    - need to have alot of patience and let baby play with / explore food at their own pace
    - need to politely ignore suggestions of grandmothers, etc who tell you what / how baby "should" be eating

I like the solids info on Kellymom.com:

    http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/so...rst-foods.html
    http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/so...ger-foods.html

    And on Dr Sears website:
    http://askdrsears.com/html/3/T030100.asp

When anyone gave me a hard time about DS not eating more solids when we started BLS, I let them know that breastmilk is by far a better source of nutrition for him and pretty much no foods come close to the amount of calories and fat in breastmilk:

Yes! Our DS did some interesting gagging when we started BLS but we were calm because (a) we knew the difference between gagging & choking, and (b) we'd taken an infant CPR calss so knew what to do if DS was choking.
