Default Fenugreek, Blessed Thistle, Mother's Milk Tea, Increased pumping

Does there come a time where your milk production just won't go up any more?

When I went back to work 3 month ago, I could consistenly pump about 24-26 oz per day. Since then, my supply has dwindled to about 16-18. Throughout this time, I've tried all of the above, and currently am doing them all.

I take 3 Fenugreeks 3 times a day, 2 Blessed Thistles 3 times a day, drink3 cups of Mother's Milk tea, and have upped my pumping to 7 times a day at work (from 5) and nurse 3 times a day. I always drink over 80 oz of water a day, When I very first started Fenugreek, I noticed an increase in milk, but it doesn't seem like it works any more. Does more fenugreek=more milk?

What else can UII try? We had to start supplementing with formula (EEK!) last week because there wasn't enough pumped milk for my DS. I'm in agony over that, which is when I upped my pumping from 5 to 7 times a day. I have an understanding employer, but I think I'm pushing it.. Help? Is there a point where you just can't get your supply back up??

A lot of pumping moms will notice a dip during their pumping careers. It's really a hard thing to do.

Here's some info on increasing your supply in general:

I use the following product as a concentrated form of fenugreek:

Some people have to use prescription meds to up their production, see above Kellymom link. I order my domperidone thru:

    Good luck!

He'll be 6 mos in a week.. We did cosleep for about a month, and I still didn't notice a difference. It seemed as if he ate all I produced during the night, so I had nothing to pump in the morning for him to eat while I work.

I'm a little leery of trying the drugs to up things.. Do they really work? Do they have any side effects?

    Hi CareyLee,

The PP's idea of reverse cycling is that your ds would take a lot more milk at night (when you two are together) and require less during the day.

Think of this as a baby who is sleeping 8-10 hours at night (I know, you are all thinking "not my baby!", but some do! ) and her therefore is not nursing at all during that time. Then he nurses a lot during the remaining 14-16 hours of the day.

If ds is taking a lot of milk at night that is good! Maybe the daycare provider can get away with offering a bit less. Many working moms have found that daycare providers often offer too much milk to babies when they show cues for other attention, such as being held, rocked, walked or worn in a sling or carrier for part of the day. Could you possibly discuss this scenario with your DCP? You could explain how ds is nursing a lot at night and his milk needs might not be as great during the day. This is hard for some DCP because they often associate feeding with comfort. They have to "think outside the box" sometimes. I know some babies who do not eat at all while separated from mom and then nurse only when together. I'm sure those DCP have to think of other ways to comfort and care for those babies.

    Does ds take a pacifier?

I would suggest you discuss the prescription drugs with your doctor.

    Hello there,

We did something similar to reverse cycling for several weeks, however day care provider didn't offer/wouldn't offer less milk during the day. His growth has stayed exactly in the 50% percentile, so I guess he's getting what he needs.

My supply has gone down to 15-17 ounces this week, despite BF/pumping a total of 10 times a day (up from 8).

He's started to sleep through the night recently, and I'm glad to finally have the sleep. I work full time, so I don't want to take the step back and have him wake every few hours again to feed. We've started playing with solids.. He'll be 6 mos. next week, and my thinking is that eventually the solids will replace whatever formula is getting supplemented, so he's only on food and breast milk.

It just seems like nothing I try is helping my supply go up.. This can't be a natural process, since babies should BF for a year or so (which was my original plan). Is just so very discouraging. Any other suggestions?

I just noticed that you drink quite a bit of water. You may try cutting back to drinking only to thirst. Anecdotally there have been some instances of moms drinking "too much" water and having it affect their supply.

    Just a thought...

    Hi,

I've always noticed that my milk supply is better in the mornings then at night. Does anyone know why?

There are alot of places that have been really helpful to me with my low milk supply. My LLL group has been great.

Kelly moms herbal remedies page has helped to explain alot to me

And I drink Breastea to increase my supply

    Babycenter is really good too
