Hi....if it makes you feel any better, I've had at least 3 root canals (lucky me, grew up on nonflourdated water) while breastfeeding my 2 kids. I had standard dental anesthesia, took Motrin for pain, and amoxicillin. We had no problems, and my endodontist (root canal specialist) was great. I'm sorry you had to go through so much.

I am a NP myself and the lack of knowledge doctors and NPs/dentists/nurses have about meds and breastfeeding absolutely floors me. It's one of my professional pet peeves.

Oh...take it from one who knows, root canals aren't so bad. Think of it as a great big filling. You'll do fine! Good luck!!!

I had a molar extracted at 8 weeks pp (thank you 9 months of morning sickness for destroying my enamel) and they numbed me with novacaine while they did it, and just told me to take Motrin for the pain. It actually wasn't that bad.

This is where I go to check on meds and their effects.
    Good luck.

Yes, the one I took was a capsule. I can't remember the brand though! I think it started with an F??
I'm not sure whether brand really matters. You could ask someone at the store what they recommend. The bottle should say what the culture count is in each pill, i.e. the potency, so that's something to look for. I'm sure someone at the store could help you pick one out.

Thanks everyone, I think I'm adequately braced for this procedure! Maggi94 -- 3 root canals, that quite an ordeal! I like my endodontist as well (when I said "dentist" in the previous posts it was for simplicity, as I didn't want to write out "endodontist" a zillion times -- it's just that he doesn't know an thing about nursing and he has a rude receptionist. I hope you can help bring greater bf awareness to the NP community! Lilahsmamma, I'll probably use motrin as well, although he may prescribe tylenol with codeine. Csan, that link is really helpful. And I'm heading back to the HFS now, Molly!

In fact, if you get a chance, you might express surprise to them that they don't keep a copy of Hale's book in the office. After all, they've got to see lots of other nursing moms, and they need to be able to check out that information for themselves (then again, maybe having the ped. give approval is their way of avoiding liability).

Okay, the saga continues -- I went to have my root canal this morning and the dentist seemed reassured by his various conversations with my pediatrician and the lactation consultant, although also happy when I said I was going to pump and dump for one feeding just as a precaution (although the LC said that wasn't necessary). He did say that they had done this procedure on lots of pregnant and lactating women -- SO WHY THE HECK DIDN'T HE KNOW WHAT DRUGS TO USE???? I wondered silently (probably you're right, austeneyre, he wanted to protect himself from liability by getting the ped to approve it.) He now seemed to have the categories down -- amoxicillin, motrin, and tylenol with codeine are in the safe category while the anesthesia (some variation on novocaine) is in the level 2 category -- probably safe but not a lot of research. He mentioned that some doctors prefer tylenol with codeine to motrin for nursing mothers, even though they are both judged "safe" -- does anyone know why???

So, he then proceded to insert three big needles full of anesthesia into my gum. I felt my gums and jaw start to numb as he left me with my magazine -- and then, I felt the numbness melt away a bit. When he came back I described this feeling, and he looked concerned, but went on to give me the second dose of three more big needles. When he came back in I felt pretty numb but not as much as I expected to -- I still had some sensation when I pinched my gum. He was worried but decided to give it a try -- but at the first poke of the tooth I felt the nerve loud and clear. So he promptly stopped, told me that the anesthesia wasn't working -- either because an infection was interfering (even though I have no signs of infection yet) or because of stress. Sometimes stress apparently interferes with the working of the drugs. He wanted to know if I had drunk a lot coffee that morning (I hadn't drunk any). My heart was in fact pounding after being stuck with six needles -- was that it? Isn't this weird? Does anyone know anything about this?

In any case, I was sent home AGAIN to take a week of antibiotics in case infection is the culprit and we'll try again next week. What should I do, take a yoga class before hand?

I had to deal with that receptionist again -- she was frosty as she obviously regards me to be a negligent mother. I tried to be cheerful and oblivious. But maybe that contributed to the stress...

    OMGoodness, Annie, how annoying!
Have you ever had issues with anesthesia not taking before?
I hope you get this figured out.

GRIN. Well, the upside of having had lots of root canals is that I understand what you went through!

My endodontist told me that when a tooth is really inflamed (he called it a "hot tooth") it can be very hard to anesthetize. Been there, but they've always just kept trying until I was numb enough. Sounds like your endodontist thinks some bacteria might be causing the inflammation....

I've also had the rapid heart beat thing. It happens when they inject the anesthesia close to a blood vessel and a little bit gets absorbed into your system, and that stimulates the rapid heart rate for a couple of minutes. Feels weird, but generally harmless!

Poor you!!! Better luck next week!!!!
