Question can i take otc cold meds?????

I have an awful sinus thing - ears clogged up, nose running, etc. I will call DR but their office is closed and I'm looking to get some relief.

    thanks,
    Nancy

I'd personally stay away from anything with a decongestant in it, particularly if your baby is really young. Too big of a risk! Some moms say that a decongestant didn't affect their supply, and others said that it did.

I just suffered through the couple of colds that I have had. Hope you feel better!

Well, interesting info I received from ped and from lactation consultant/nurse:

ped said advil c & s was okay

lc/nurse said it could reduce supply. she did some research and suggested musenex and regular ibuprofen

So far, so good. Thought I'd share with any other sicky mommies out there.

    :-)

my LC said that anything that a decongestant would lower your supply (it dries up your runny nose, i guess it also dries up your milk). I had a cough and cold last week. Just drank lots and lots of water, ate well, tried torest as often as I can. She did recommend cough drops though...not really help you get better but, hey, relieves you temporarily.

    Hope you feel better!

Search this database to see if a drug is ok to use. Oral decongestants are not good, but you can use nose sprays like Afrin. Dextromethorphan (DM for short) is a cough suppressant and guaifenesin (Mucinex) is an expectorant that is safe and I have found helpful. And Ibuprofen.

Here is the Kelly Mom link to medications safe to use while breastfeeding. It's a great resource to bookmark! Note: this is the complete list, not exclusive to just cold and flu

    I had a great lc

She told me before I even left hospital with ds that "if it'll dry your nose, it'll dry your milk'

And I wasn't even sick! She said if I could remember that, then I would know what meds to take or not to take for colds.
