I see that another mom is having this issue with her 4-monther. My 3.5-monther is having this issue, too. He's so distracted. He latches for a few minutes, then breaks away and smiles and has a nice long conversation with me. I have to go into a dark room just to get him to nurse.

Is this a normal phase? Does it end, or is it going to be an ongoing struggle for the next 8 months?

Totally normal. Still waiting to see if mine'll outgrow it, and she's almost 7 mos. Hope yours does faster than mine!

Totally normal. Your baby is at the age where they are distracted by everything! Minimizing the distractions will help a lot (dark, quiet room). This will get better. My 7 month old went through that period a few months ago. It is a lot better now, although if her daddy starts talking while she is nursing she has to look up to see what is going on!

It's amazing, but they really can get enough milk in the three sucks, pull off, talk to Mom, 2 more sucks, pull off, gaze at the fuzz in the air, 4 sucks, pull off, did I hear something? I remember being really concerned, but she always had enough wet diapers and was gaining weight. She just was really efficient.

Nowadays, at over 8 months, we still have some distracted times, but towards evening and in the night, she settles down and is all business.

Yep - totally normal. Your baby is beginning to be more aware of the world.

Here's a good article on the distractable baby and some tactics for mom.

That's for that kellymom article. It's very helpful. Here I was thinking that my son just wasn't that into me.
