    Default When should I pump?

I would like to start pumping in order to store milk for when I go back to work in September and for some days I have to leave her. My baby is not quite two weeks. I'm wondering when is the best time to pump. After she nurses? Before? She is nursing every two hours for about 40 minutes to an hour. Should I wait until she's a little bit older or is it ok to start now? Thanks!

    Congratulations on your new baby!
If you are not returning to work until September, you could easily wait a month or so until you start pumping. This will also allow your milk supply to stabilize a bit. Pumping a lot right now might trigger oversupply issues, which chould make breastfeeding more difficult. Better to get breastfeeding going well first, then think about pumping.

Many moms like to have a bit stored in the freezer as a reassurance, but once you are working, you really don't need a huge stash. The milk you pump Monday mid-morning becomes Tuesday's mid-morning feeding. The milk you pump Monday mid-day becomes Tuesday's mid-day feeding, etc. The milk pumped on Friday becomes Monday's bottles. A little extra in the freezer is handy for growth spurts until your supply catches up.

A good time to pump is early in the morning. You will probably feel most "full" then. Don't worry if you pump and then your baby wants to eat. She'll still get plenty of milk. Your body will make it while she nurses, and she is going to be more efficient than any pump.

Here are a few links about working and breastfeeding. They might answer some questions you don't even know you have yet.

Thanks so much! This is my third baby but the first time I am seriously pumping. My other two just had formula. My friend has given me a double electric breast pump which I never had before. Thanks again.
