Default Reflux in 13 day old?

I think my youngest has reflux (screaming for hours, arching back, hiccuping all the time, wanting to always be attached to the breast). My boys both have reflux and have used so many medicines (mylican drops, mylanta, pepto, zantac, prilosec, prevacid, etc...) and I'd like to try to avoid having her use medicines so early. Is there anything in a moms diet that is more likely to cause reflux? Can caffeine cause these problems? Any ideas on ways to help her without turning to meds so soon? We have an appointment with the ped tomorrow and I plan on bringing it up, but I thought I'd try to get help here first. Thanks for any help.

Caffiene - Chocolate - Onions and Milk caused a LOT of gas and tummy problems for my DS. Since I stopped milk all together and eat the others in serious moderation things are MUCH better. OUr Spitting up problem now is just a laundry issue now. it took about 2 weeks for the diet change to make a noticable difference in my lo

Eliminating dairy made a huge difference w/ my LO. I need to cut out chocolate too I think, he's been throwing up in the AM since I've been eating this chocolate cake I made. I do use the mylicon drops on occasion if I can hear his tummy bubbling and I can't get a good burp out of him.

I would try the diet change first b4 meds. Idk about the caffiene, I don't drink any yet... my LO doesn't need anything else to keep him up LOL.

I'm a homeschooler, too. Nice to see you here!

Here's some information on GER in breastfed babies:
    http://www.lalecheleague.org/llleade...bMar03p12.html
    http://www.lalecheleague.org/FAQ/ger.html
    http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/reflux.html

You mentioned foods in mom's diet that could cause issues. In that case, dairy is frequently the culprit. You can read more about sensitivities and baby's behavior here:
    http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns...ity.html#dairy
    http://www.lalecheleague.org/NB/NBJulAug98p100.html

If you have overproduction issues or overactive let-down, working on that should help a lot. In fact, a lot of the symptoms you mentioned can be present just from overproduction! More info:
    http://www.lalecheleague.org/FAQ/oversupply.html

Hope this info is helpful to you! Please do come back and let us know what the doctor says. Best of luck to you!

So sorry you're having this trouble- My son had reflux, also, and it is so hard to know your LO is having pain and hurting.

If you can, try not to alter your diet drastically as a first resort- YOU need to be nourished to keep up the hard work of having a newborn and having other children, too. I know I only ate turkey, peaches and rice for the first month of Aaron's life and I was SOOOO worn down and it didn't help him at all (but I gave it the old college try!). I realize the person above has discovered that diet changes help her- so I hate to be confusing you. Perphaps eliminating caffiene coudln't hurt too much except that it helps you make it through the sleeplessness! But otherwise, eliminating food from your diet is rarely the culprit in the struggles babies have. Yes, it can and does happen, but from what I understand it is very rare.

Could burping be an issue? Is she burping okay? I know this might sound like an obvious question, but just a thought to run past you. Hope your appointment goes well- hang in there, mama!

maybe just tweaking how you feed the baby will help.
    Hows her diapars? And growth?
sometime babies and moms have trouble with over supply and that causes some of the systoms your talking about.

IT's normal for babies to want to nurse alot! IT makes them feal beter.
check out thoose links from the pp.
And don't be afraid to talk to your local LLL leader she can help sort things out too.

dr sears has some good info on his web site about high needs babies

I took Ella to the ped yesterday. She's growing fine (7lbs 8oz) and the doctor said she 'looks perfect'. She said that it does sound like Ella could have reflux and that we should try 1/4 teaspoon of mylanta when she seems to have problems. I am also going to cut out caffeine (it's only 1 cup of coffee a day, so it shouldn't be too hard) and see if that helps. If she doesn't seem better in 2 weeks, then I'll keep a food diary to see if I notice a pattern with what I eat vs her fussiness. That way I am not randomly removing things from my diet.

    Thanks for the help!
