My milk didn't come in until I was home - about 3 days after delivery. I put the baby on the the breast every 1-2 hrs those first couple of days w/o pumping and she was fine. After my milk came in on day 3, however, I did start to pump for a couple of weeks (not being educated) and I definitely think it contributed to my oversupply and overactive letdown. It was definitely painful for several weeks since I was constantly engorged. So, I'd just feed on demand w/o pumping.

Even if you needed to supplement baby, you can hand express onto a spoon and feed your baby the colostrum. Colostrum is the perfect food for your baby (nutrient and volume wise).

Hi, I have a question regarding the responses. I am due soon (went into labor about a week ago, very slow going ), and am a nut about feeding my kids. I supplimented right off the bat with both the other kids, and will try not to this time. anyway, when I tried to pump and hand express in the hospital, I didn't get anymore than one little tiny drop (not anywhere close to a 1/2 teaspoon). I didn't succesfully bf the other two because of supply issues, and am wondering if taking fenugreek will help with colostrum, too.
    thanks

nunlef: pumps are not as effective as getting milk/colostrum out as babies. babies actually "milk" your breast, while pumps just sort of suck it out. unless you're concerned your new baby has a bad latch or some other problem preventing them from getting it out, there's no need to do anything but let him/her nurse as much as they want. the colostrum is the perfect food for those early days.

Did you supplement with formula or expressed milk? If formula, are you aware that your supplementing with your older kids is likely what caused your supply issues? I think supply issues are the number # reason women give up breastfeeding and any formula will start you down that road right away.

best of luck, keep reading all you can- you can exclusively breastfeed if that's your wish for your next baby!

Colostrum is usually produced in very small quantities. There's no need to use fenugreek to try to increase it. If you have a milk supply issue, there are better things to try before going to herbs and medications.

    See this link on colostrum:
