Default Looking for "proof" for extended breastfeeding?

    Hi all,

My daughter is only 11 weeks old - but I am planning on breastfeeding her until she "child weans." Since I am the ONLY one on my side of the family and on my husband's side of the family that breastfeeds - I know I am going to get slammed. (I am already being told by MIL that I need to start solids! )
So - any articles or websited that you know of that discuss the importance and "benefits" of extended breastfeeding would be very appreciated!

    thank you!
    Stefanie

This should get you started (not a LLL resource, though) -- Extended Breastfeeding Fact Sheet

You might just want to get your hands on some good books... Like "Mothering Your Nursing Toddler" and "How Weaning Happens". Both of those will give you information about extended nursing and child-led weaning.

Dig around on the Kellymom site and check out the references she gives on that Extended Breastfeeding Fact Sheet. You may also just want to do a Google search for "benefits of breastfeeding" or something like that. There's a LOT of stuff out there!

    Good luck!

Have you already been through LLL's site?
Here's the link to extended nursing resources around here.
The magazine New Beginnings often has many good mothers' stories and articles. It comes every other month with LLL membership.
You are really thinking ahead! Good for you!
Perhaps by the time your dd is a year, you will have shown your family so many benefits along the way, they might not question your choices at all!

Boy are you planning ahead!! I have to agree with all the other posts that recommend La Leche League meetings! LLL meetings are a place where you can meet other moms who are nursing toddlers (or in your case, who will be nursing toddlers in the future). Most of my best friends are women that I met at LLL meetings. While we have a variety of parenting styles, we do have nursing in commong, and ALL of my League friends are non-judgemental about our parenting differences.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends bf for at least one year, and for as long after as both are happy with the situation. They also state ther is no upper limit when bf is inappropriate.

I would stronly recommend the following:
    Biocultural Perspectives in Breastfeeding
edited by Patricia McStuart (I think) and Katheryn Dettwyler.
Also, go to Katheryn Dettwylers website (Google her name, and it will show up)
This is kind of a pet topic for me, I could go on forever! E-mail me privately if you want to hear me get up on my soap box!!
