I've tried using warm water and wash cloth to clean DD's tongue, but it is hard to have her mouth open wide. She hates it.

Just curious, but why would you want to?

I have not done that. Kind confused, did someone tell you to?

It's family member's advice, I usually leave her alone. I want to find out what are the benefits of washing her tongue, and whether I could use a finger brush to massage her tongue??

This is the first I've ever heard of this. Some people rub the teeth and tongue with a warm washcloth once they have teeth and I think that's just to get them used to brushing when they do start brushing.

My ped, has never advised me to do that with DD and she's 10months with 2 bottom teeth. IMO, breatfed babies have the best breath. I see no need to do that.

Maybe another poster has a different view.

My mom told me about this practice...she said it was recommended when she was breastfeeding my sisters and I, but I think it's a wives tale. The reason she gave was that leaving milk sugars (lactose) in the mouth can cause yeast and rot teeth. I haven't been able to find any legit info backing it up.
Anyone else know if there's any truth to this practice?

I've heard that, but more for bottlefed babies, since they can't regulate intake and only once they've had their teeth. But more about not putting them to bed with the bottle than anything else.
