Default Is Mucinex safe while bfing?

I have a screaming baby right now... I am not breastfeeding because I'm afraid of mucinex in my breastmilk ... I couldn't find any info on Dr Hale's forum. Help.

You shuld take a look at the "Cold and Allergy Remedies Compatible with Breastfeeding" section on Kelymom.com

Also, according to Hale, the active ingredient in Mucinex, Guaifenesin (also found in Robitussin) is considered to be a L2 (safer) category drug by the AAP ratings. Basically, they don't know of any ill effects but there have not been any controlled studies in humans or animals.

This is from the Mayo clinic: There are no adequate studies in women for determining infant risk when using this medication during breastfeeding. Weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks before taking this medication while breastfeeding.

The biggest problem with medicines designed to dry you up is that they aren't usually specific to the sinuses and can lower your milk supply. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids, nurse and pump a bit extra to keep your supply up.
Also, breastmilk squirted up your nose works good at clearing things out too. Someone on these boards told me this and I did not believe them until I tried it and it worked!!

I hope you get feeling better soon.
