I have read many of the other threads and they have been very helpful so I thought I'd ask for some assistance with my breastfeeding questions.
I had my daughter at 36 weeks and she became jaundiced so she was supplemented with formula from Day 2 while in the hospital and then NICU.
I have a low milk supply and am currently taking Fenugreek (4 pills 3X perday) and have just been put on Metoclopramide for 12 days. So far, nothing has helped increase my supply. My lactation specialist suggested that I pump 6-8 times per day and try feeding my daughter once a day with a nipple shield. My daughter latches on to the nipple shield for a few seconds then realizes nothing is going to come out - and cries and will not latch again. (I am not sure of the benefit of the nipple shield - can someone explain?)
My lactation specialist also suspected a breast infection due to the large amounts of antibiotics that I was given during labor so I am applying Bactroban to my nipples 3X per day.
Between the nightime feedings (bottle with expressed breastmilk or formula if I don't have enough breast milk), the constant pumping and low supply I am a bit discouraged. I would like to breastfeed my daughter as soon as possible - even if it is just during the morning feeding when I seem to have a little more milk.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help!
