    Question LLL Leader Advice Request

My 18 month old is still nursing about every 3-4 hours throughout the day.

I want to go to a gym near me that offers infra-red sauna treatments twice a week - is this safe?

She said she knows it can affect the milk supply - and that I would need to drink lots and lots of water - because the body will detoxify.

    Thank you so much!!

Hmmm... I'll try to see what I can find out.
How does she know it affects milk supply -- does she have some published information or it is anectodal? And in what way does it affect the milk?

    Hi Jeffs_hope,
We don't have any information specific to infared saunas, but we do have info on tanning beds:

and this non-LLL info on hot tubs:

Since we don't have specific research for this situation, we couldn't comment on its safety beyond a shadow of a doubt. Perhaps you could go slowly, staying only 10 minutes or so at first? Drinking plenty of water would be important, to stay hydrated, and watch for adverse affects.

A minor concern might be from sweating alot. A baby might reject the breast due to the salty taste if the mother didn't rinse off first.

Another concern might be detoxification. Similar to rapid weight loss, one might be concerned that toxins from the body could be released into the breastmilk.

I think this is one of those situations where you might benefit from talking to lots of people to gather all the information you can. As an LLL Leader I'm not able to tell you "safe" or "not safe". I hope these resources help you as you decide what to do.
