    Default BFing After C-Section

    Hello,
I recently read that it may take a couple of extra days for milk to come in after having a c-section. Is this true?
If so, exactly how long can baby thrive on colostrum only?
At what point would it be neccessary for me to suppliment with formula?

    Hi Laurie,

This is a good LLL article/FAQ on breastfeeding after cesarean http://www.lalecheleague.org/FAQ/cesarean.html

If your baby is nursing frequently and having the appropriate number of wet and dirty diapers for their age, you can rest assured that everything is okay.

    Colostrum:

Here's some info on how to tell if baby is getting enough:

When will milk come in (post cesarean):

Hi Laurie, I've had three c sections and never had any problem with not having enough to nurse the baby - I think no matter whether you have a vaginal birth or a c section everyone starts out with the colostrum and then the milk comes in after a few days.

I have only had c-sections (3) and my milk usually comes in before I leave the hospital. I have never had a problem with bf'ing due to my c-sections.

Hello Erin, Jolie, Happy Mom & Mom to 3 Girls!!
Thank you so much for the input. The OBGYN nurse that taught my childbirth class had scared me into thinking that I would most likely have to supplement w/ formula if I had a C-section. She said a couple other things that I disagreed with. Glad I posted. I worried for nothing! Thanks again Ladies!

It's amazing how little doctors and nurses know about breastfeeding. It is so sad since they are the ones that have such a big influence on weither a woman bf or not.

if you do have a c-section you might have lots of retained water from the bags and bags of iv fluides. I had a c-section with my 4th baby. I don't think that my milk came in any diffent then my other babys.
You just need to make shure that the baby doesn't get any bottles or passifiers. Have your hubby go with the baby to the nursery and make sure that he knows that the baby doesn't need a bottle!
heres a link to something on reverse pressure softing....

it helps the baby latch on if you are having problems with latch from the swelling from iv's. I think this would have helped me after I had my dd.

get you local lll leaders phone number to take to the hospital that way if you run into trouble or have more ?'s she can help you right away.
    good luck with the baby

Just wanted to chime in that I had no problems bf-ing after a c-section. My husband stayed with the baby while she got all cleaned up and my doula stayed with me while they stitched me up and took me to recovery. Then, my husband kept insisting that they get the baby to me asap for breastfeeding. I wasn't in recovery 10 mins before they had the baby into me and I was nursing. She nursed like a champ from the get-go and my milk also came in before I left the hospital. We plan on having the same routine for this next baby who is a repeat planned c-section.

It really is important to be insistent to everyone who will listen that you plan on exclusively bf-ing and that you want the baby brought to you asap to nurse.

My milk didn't come in until day 5. Once the baby lost more than 10% of her original birth weight, the pediatrician suggested we supplement with formula until my milk arrived. She also had jaundice and we needed her to pass more dirty diapers.

This is the way I did it and I have a very healthy milk supply:

Starting on day 3, there was no milk to be seen yet. So I would nurse for 15 minutes to stimulate production, then Daddy would give her a formula bottle at every other feeding. The key is to always nurse first.

This went on every couple of hours until day 5 when milk came in.

I don't know that it was because of the c-section, sometimes it just takes a little longer to come in. Hope this helps.
