Default Baby keeps choking while Breastfeeding

Hello I am new here but I have a breastfeeding question.

My son born 12/19/2006 at 2 months keeps choking while he is breastfeeding. I sit him up and pat his back but sometimes I think it takes a really long time for him to breath again. Its probably only a few seconds, but it seems like a VERY long time to me.

I use the boppy and I just have him sitting up on my lap, but it doesn't seem like anything helps. Is this just normal??

    Thanks!

    Danielle

Sounds like maybe you've got overactive let down?

Here's some resources / articles - does any of this sound familiar?

    Hello & welcome.

It may be a case of OALD (overactive/forceful let down).
Has he always had trouble with this?

I had the same problem, and still do in the mornings. I have a ton of milk, and LO gets SO hungry that he chokes himself trying to eat too fast. He got used to it- and I'm such a bad mom because now I laugh when he does it. He's so funny because he gets such a disgruntled look on his face!

You're welcome! The links above have some very useful tips about how to manage OALD ... and the good news is that as your baby gets older he should also do a better job of keeping up and/or regulating flow. My DS knows to pull off if my let down is too forceful, or he'll let the extra milk spill out the lower side of his mouth.
