    Default How much per day?

Hi, I will be going back to work soon and I am trying to build a freezer supply. My question is, how much should I plan on my LO needing throughout the day? My son will be 8 weeks when I go back to work. I will be gone from 8 am - 3:30 pm.

    Thank you!

A good rule of thumb is that baby needs 1 to 1.5 oz for every hour away from mom. 8 am to 3:30 pm is 7.5 hours, which would mean 7.5 to 11.25 oz.

It's pretty common for babies to take a couple of weeks to get adjusted to the new situation at day care, so don't be surprised if at first your son eats littel to nothing at day care and then cluster feeds & reverse cycles with you nursing in the evening and at night. My son did this and it make for a very exhausting couple of weeks before he decided to settle in and be comfortable with day care. If you're not sure how much your LO will eat at a time, you might want to send milk in smaller amounts in several bottles. If you haven't done so already, its also a good idea to talkw ith your day care provider and make sure they know how to correctly handle breast milk and how to bottle feed a BF baby.

There are also several threads on this topic in the working moms & caregivers area of the forum.

Thank you very much! Fortunately for me, my husband works swing shift (2pm - whenever he gets home) so my husband will just be taking from the fridge and freezer. You mentioned there was a special way to bottlefeed a BF baby. Is there a trick? So far my son has only had 2-3 bottles.

Thanks for the help, I will check out the other forum!

Here's some great resources on bottle feeding a breastfed baby:

    http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/bottle-feeding.html
    http://askdrsears.com/html/2/T025000.asp

Sometimes a baby may "over eat" on a bottle because the LO is used to being able to comfort nurse, and also sometimes the care giver may offer a bottle everytime baby is fussy or cries rather than trying alternate methods to soothe.

Since your husband is the caregiver this may not be a problem, but many moms have had to educate their day care providers about how to best give a bottle.
