Try tickling the bottom lip so that the mouth opens really wide... and don't latch on until the mouth is open really nice and wide.

    Kubi,
This is kind of difficult to explain via this forum, but I would suggest you create a "nipple sandwich". And what I mean by that, is you smoosh down your areola (the dark area around your nipple) so it makes it smaller to fit in baby's mouth.

Imagine you're watching someone eating a really big hamburger, a Big Mac, for example. If they try to fit the hamburger in their mouth head on, it won't work. Instead, they open their mouth wide. Then they land the bottom bun on their bottom lip first. Then they "smoosh" the burger to make it easier to fit. Next, the upper lip hits the top bun and they take a HUGE bite. Make sense?

So, try to do that with your baby. Tickle your baby's lips with your nipple. Wait until baby opens wide (like a yawn). Smoosh down your areola (to make it an easier fit). Land the areola on your baby's bottom lip first, then the top of the lip.

You will notice that your baby has taken in more areola on the bottom than on the top. Also, you will notice that your nipple is pointed up, towards the roof of baby's mouth.

This should make the latch more comfortable.

Also, please call your local LLL Leader or IBCLC for more assistance. We can tell you some things that might help via this forum, but latch issues are tricky and they are best helped when mother and baby can be *seen*.

So, call someone local, okay? If you need help finding someone, give us a shout! And do come back and let us know how you're doing!

ITA. Try the nipple sandwich! It saved my nipples! I had blood blisters before I was shown this technique.

Please get some local help, too, okay? And please do let us know how it's going.

    YOU CAN DO IT!

thanks for the suggestions and encouragement. i am now using the sandwich technique and have noticed a difference but i guess i was hoping for sudden changes...not so lucky there.
i still havent had much luck with the blanching nipples though and that can really hurt - when the blood starts coming back.

i would LOVE local help - unfortunately i am out of the country and there are no groups near by and there is a big language barrier for me so i have not yet found any local consultant to check and see. for people like me this forum is such a blessing and i am so glad i found it. when i start entertaining thoughts of quitting i get on here and just start reading posts. i guess misery loves company and it is good to read about other moms who have made it through diffiicult challenges.

the nipple sandwhich works great for me! especially since i have one nipple that is smaller than the other. also it helped to use the nipple to actually roll the bottom lip down. i found that if i tried to use my hands to do it dd would try to latch onto my finger!

I don't know if any of these towns are nearby. I thought you'd know better than I. I'll do some personal researching and see if I can't find someone in Campinas for you. Hopefully, someone who is fluent in English! Give me a day or so, and I'll let you know!

In the meanwhile, it's good to hear that you're feeling a little better. Is your baby having plenty of wet and poopy diapers? http://www.lalecheleague.org/FAQ/enough.html

Did the info on the blanching web page help? Anything sound familiar?

things are going much better. i still get blanched after a feed but then again i noticed i have a tendency to blanch even if he is not nursing. i am pain free during the feeds now with some pain afterward which seems to be diminishing and i think this might be something he has to grow out of.

the links have been helpful and i was suprised to see so many resources in brasil. the one in cuiaba was of particular interest because we will be moving there at the end of the year and i have friends there now, one of which is having a lot of problems with her 4 mo.

    thanks again!!
