Default breast feeding an older adopted baby?

    Hello,

I am new here. We are in the process of adopting a baby girl from China. She is 18 months right now and I am hoping to have her home by her 2nd birthday in Sept.

Do you thinks she is too old for me to try to breastfeed? She has lived her whole life in an orphanage and I just feel like she needs the closeness and bonding with me.

I really want to try it. Do you think it is ok?

    Thanks!

    Lynn

Congratulations on getting your baby girl! Here is a great article on adoptive nursing beyond infancy, from LLL's Leaven publication: http://www.lalecheleague.org/llleade...tNov04p99.html

Thanks! I see you nurse your 3 yr old, that is so great. I hope my little girl will want to nurse. I am going to try it for sure.

Lots of women have nursed adopted babies - it is much more common than you may think
I strongly suggest that you contact a local LLL Leader, who will be able to help you monitor your baby's intake and offer all kinds of helpful tips. You can find a local Leader by going to:

If you don’t see a Group near you, call the nearest Leader, because not all Groups are listed.

There are some very helpful articles about adoptive nursing in a stickie at the top of this forum's list:

    best of luck,
