    Default Cracked nipples won't heal

I have had seriously cracked nipples for a couple of weeks, and after seeing lactation consultants think that we finally have a good latch. Breastfeeding is much more comfortable for me now, except these cracks just won't heal!

They are like open cuts, 2 on my left nipple and one on my right. Sometimes they look like they are healing between feedings, and then when the nipple protrudes to feed they open back up.

I've tried lanisoh for weeks, spent a day pumping only the left side (but she usually feeds from both sides and was acting STARVING after only having the right, and will NOT go back on that breast once she is "done"), prescription stuff my midwife prescribed (betamethasone and something else), heat, everything I have read or heard.

Has anyone been through this before? How did you get rid of them? Maybe I will see the LC again and double check our latch is right but I feel like we are doing it well now. She's opening wide, I'm getting her on with a big wide mouth, lips are turned out...

I feel as though I might actually enjoy breastfeeding if the cracks would heal. It is SO MUCH LESS painful, but still feels sensitive where the cracks are.

My baby is 5 weeks old tomorrow.

    Thanks.

I was right there with you! My DD at birth had to be finger fed because she would move her tongue forward instead of the usual roll back. When she finally grasped how to do it right, she had an extremely strong suction! It was so strong that it ended up ripping off a piece of my nipple. It was extremely painful and I practically cried every time I nursed her.

I tried for weeks with Lansinoh, Soothies and even by pumping that side after each feeding. (which was very tiring at nights) Then after 6 weeks of dealing with the pain and still no improvement, as well as getting Mastitis... I asked my doctor if it was okay to use Neosporin. He said that it was completely fine and safe for the baby as long as I just wiped it off before feeding her. Air does help too, just strut around with the flaps down on your nursing bra whenever you get the chance.

Try using the Soothies along with some Neosporin and the lanolin, it helped me with dramatic results within days compared to the weeks I dealt with the pain.

i was there too! i really feel for you because i know how painful it is. once we got a good latch, it still took a month for it to heal. i remember reading someone saying that very thing and crying to my dh. i couldn't imagine it for another month, but it did take that long and it wasn't the end of the world! it got slowly better throughout the month and the time just flies. i sepent a lot of time with the nursing flaps down too. i did get thrush though in that time which is common with cracked nipples. so be careful of that. you may want to take acidopholis (sp?) supplements to prevent it. the thrush was no fun but we got through that too! it gets better. my daughter is 11wks now and things are great. good luck.

Thanks for your replies, it's nice to hear from others who have been through this.

I saw another lactation consultant today at a breastfeeding support clinic the hospital has, and she is 90% sure I have thrush and that is why they are not healing. I wanted to go and make sure we have our latch right, since I started to wonder if that was why they weren't healing. But we are doing it fine!

    My midwife has prescribed Nystatin.
