    Default responsible for illness?

So ds weaned about a month ago and suddenly he has his 1st ear infection and yesterday he had vomiting and diarrhea for the 1st time too. I feel extremely guilty because he was never sick (except a runny nose a few times) when he was bfing. Did I do this wrong and am I responsible for these ailments? I feel just terrible.

I know how helpless and awful it feels when your child gets sick, especially when you can't nurse him any more!

This pattern is fairly common -- a toddler weans and then soon after is sick with various ailments for a while.

Part of it may be that he isn't getting the immunities in breastmilk now, but part of it may be that he is older, more active, and getting exposed to more germs. My son was still nursing when he got influenza at 13 months and then pneumonia at 15 months. I was glad he was still nursing, and I suspect it helped him recover quickly, but it didn't keep him from getting sick in the first place!

Kids tend to get sick a lot when they first enter daycare, preschool, or kindergarten, also. You're not doing anything wrong and you didn't cause this! Hope this helps, and hope he is feeling better soon.

The first two times I attempted nightweaning, she got an ear infection.. I think it was partly the stress of it, the sleep deprivation, and less of my milk. But don't feel GUILTY because you PREVENTED an infection until now. He's gonna get sick sometime. You just kept it away until he was bigger. That's GREAT! And it may have nothing to do with it -- it IS cold season.

I wouldn't feel too bad. I've always envied all the bragging post about how people's breastfed babies never get sick. I've nursed all mine past the 1 year mark but I feel like they're alwasy battling something. All 3 of mine have gotten their first ear infection while we were still nursing. We've also had pneumonia, croup, RSV, you name it.

Its that time of year again when rotavirus rears its ugly head. I know several several families at church that are battling it right now. i wouldn't feel bad or worry to much, you did a wonderful job nursing him as long as you did.

All over the world there exists in every society a small group of women who feel themselves strongly attracted to giving care to other women during pregnancy and childbirth. Failure to make use of this group of highly motivated people is regrettable and a sin against the principle of subsidiary. ~ Dr. Kloosterman, Chief of OB/GYN, Univ. of Amsterdam, Holland
