Default What should I feed him?

Aidan is 6 months today. I believe in child led and plan on starting him on solids in the new year.

My question...I do not plan on feeding him cereal as his first real food. I understand that cereal is important for the iron intake, but I'm wondering what else I can feed him that has the adequete amount of iron. I know watermelon and sweet potatoes are recommended. Any advice would be appreciated.

    TIA

I have seen many moms here against or not wanting to use cereal as first foods....with out going into too much detail (cuz twins never allow too much time to be online or read) why is that? WIC gives it as a first food and they are all about nutrition so why is it not supported here by moms? Just curious because my boys are reaching the 5 months and I would like to introduce them to something. I am blessed that dh and I don't have any food alergies, problem is, he is from the middle east and his mom is here and they have a very different approach to feeding babies. She is already putting her finger in her tea and giving my boys a taste! I always fed my other 2 cereal...that was 12 and 19 yrs ago though and would like to experiment other ideas...TIA

From what I have read (and advice from other moms) there are a lot of preservatives in baby cereal. Also, cereal does not provide any benefits to the baby except iron. This is why I would like to start my baby on 'real' solids. I know a lot of moms who have started their children on cereal, but I prefer not to.

Interesting and makes a lot of sense....considering that WIC esp. focuses on iron! THX 4 the info.

Hey Nancy! Happy 6-monther to little Mr. Man. How exciting to start solids with him! It's so much fun, especially letting them feed themselves.

I believe Annie posted a few Web sites listing foods high in iron. Here are a few I saved on my favorites:

Have fun and keep us posted on how everything goes!

the iron thats in baby cereal isn't absorbed well by your body.
at least thats how I understand it. The iron in breastmilk is the most absorable for baby. and most stuff that is written about starting solids was writen by the baby food companies and they just want you to buy jar after jar of mashed up food.
    this is a good link

    thanks Laura..
testing for iron can be done in a simple finger prick, most doctors do it at about 9-12 months.
IF your baby was born early their iron might be lower then other babies.
and the doctor might recomend vitamans for your baby.
