Unhappy My breasts are suddenly soft! Is my milk supply slipping?

    Is my baby weaning??

My baby is 5 months old and until now my breasts have always been engorged most of the time. I had mastitis 4 times, oversupply, fast flow, with breasts waking me up at night and having to ice them after feedings so I could get some sleep- until a few days ago!

We were finally sleeping longer stretches at night and she was not nursing well during the day-- went 8 hours in between feedings a few times. Suddenly my breasts are soft, like pre-pregnancy soft! And she cries and complains at the breast.

I think she is used to super fast flow and has to work to get it out. To make matters worse, it's been tough nursing because she is so distracted AND already has two razor sharp teeth that she likes to bite me with.

Should I worry my milk supply is slipping? I've been pumping once a day but she won't take a bottle yet and really is not nursing well. It's tricky, because I am SO afraid of oversupply and mastitis.

I think this sounds like you had pretty bad overproduction for much longer than is typical, and now your milk production is finally figuring out how to make enough rather than too much. Coupled with normal nursing behavioral changes that typically occur around this age as well as some experimental or teething pain related biting (also fairly common around this age) , it all might be looking like more of a problem than it actually is.

If you think the slower flow is making her upset, you can try breast compressions or switch nursing. But a change from fast to slow flow is a normal progression and most babies learn to go with the new flow over time.

with MaddieB. When a baby gets used to oversupply and fast flow, they are often pretty grumpy when supply adjusts and they have to figure out how to get their preferred milk flow from a less-full breast.

Just checking- any chance of pregnancy, or have you recently started a new hormonal contraceptive?
