I used it for the last month, it did make my nipples and areola a little softer. I also did not use soap on my breasts (still don't). I stopped using the lanolin on a regular basis when I stopped leaking all the time and could quit wearing breast pads. Now I just use it if I'm feeling a little "raw". HTH!

honestly, i don't think it really made a big difference for me. i used it for the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy...applied it before i went into the shower...and like the pp, i didn't use soap on my nipple/areola area. using it after i gave birth was probably more helpful that using it before.

There's really no evidence that using lanolin cream during the pregnancy helps. It can certainly help soothe and heal sore nipples once breastfeeding starts though! No need to "prepare" the nipples. You'll hear old wives tales like rub them with a rough towel or pinch and roll the nipples every day. These are not useful and may actually be damaging.

Hi nywifey! The best way to avoid sore nipples right from the beginning is to make sure you are using proper latch and positioning. I honestly never had sore nipples until ds got older and I paid less attention to the latch (and he was doing gymnastics while nursing!!!

Sorry to get off the subject but fezzik812.... I absolutely love that BFing picture! Have been trying for months to get one of the twins to put in their photo albums! I hope I get one that good some day. Did you take it or someone else?

FWIW, my doctor specifically told me NOT to use lanolin before the baby came, so as not to make the nipples too soft and tender. *shrug*

I have found my only use for lanolin is to lanolize DC's longies. For my nipples I always preferred NE's all natural nipple butter. It never felt gooey or sticky like lanolin and smells so much better. Also helps prevent chapping, I use it on my lips & hands during the winter too.
