I'm wondering how long breastmilk can stay at room temperature.
Consider the following situations.
1) If I pump and let the milk sit out, how long can it sit?
2) If I get milk out of the refrigerator and warm it up, how long can it sit?
3) Once the baby drinks some of it, how long can it sit? Can I put it back in the fridge if he doesn't finish it? One nurse told us that because of the bacteria in the backwash he can't have it unless he finishes it within approximately an hour.
Another question is about storing breastmilk. I switched to a dairy-free diet so I have a freezer full of milk I can't use for now. I moved it from the freezer in the kitchen to a chest freezer in the garage. How long can I keep it before I have to throw it away or give it to the neighbor's cat?
Thanks for your help! I've been pumping for 90 days now and I sure hope our 28 weeker (who has passed his due date) will be home from the hospital soon! I'm also looking forward to the day when he will be exclusively breastfeeding and I can get rid of the pump!
