Thread: Can my entire breast have clogged ducts?

Default Can my entire breast have clogged ducts?

My baby is 8.5 weeks old and I'm on my second bout of mastitis. I'm on day 12 of antibiotics so feel fine and the redness on my breast is gone, however, the breast where I had mastitis feels very different from my other breast, which is very soft. The mastitis breast feels somewhat knotty all over when I massage it...very very tiny knots, not how I'd imagine a clogged duct to feel. I don't think I would even think anything of it if it wasn't so different feeling from my other breast. The mastitis breast is larger and has always produced more milk. Would love any thoughts on if this is something to be concerned about...don't think my whole breast has clogged ducts because I'm producing pretty well from it...but nervous about getting mastitis again!

If you were able to look inside the breast, you'd see that the milk ducts are like... Well, almost like grapes distributed throughout the breast. When those ducts fill up, you're going to feel clusters of hard little "grapes". What you're feeling means either that the breast is really overproducing, or that some of those ducts aren't getting drained.

this sounds exactly like plugs to me. The feel and size of plugs varies tremendously. Especially considering the recurring mastitis, I bet this is plugs. It is a myth that if a mother has plugs, even multiple plugs, it necessarily means the milk flow is impeded. We have a lot of milk ducts!

Keep trying these ideas for clearing the plugs. You need to clear the plugs to prevent more mastitis. http://www.llli.org/docs/00000000000...plugsblebs.pdf
