Default Metronizadol Vaginal Gel - Help

    Hi there,

I just came from my doctors office and she gave me Metronidazole Vaginal Gel for Bacterial Vaginosis.

The guy on the counter gave me a paper with Breast Feeding Consideration. The manufacturer recommends whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug.

My baby is 7 months old, and she can not go to sleep without me breastfeeding. She is on my breasts 24/7. What should I do??? How can I stop for 5 whole days. This is mission impossible. Please, help with some advices. I would really appreciate it. Don't know what to do

    Welcome to the forum!

Before you make a decision, contact Infant Risk: http://www.infantrisk.com. They may be able to tell you whether use of topical metronidazole presents a true risk to your baby! and may be able to suggest ways to mitigate the risk if there is one.

The very reliable Kellymom.com lists metronizadole as L3, which means that it is considered "moderately safe" for use during lactation. See http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/meds/acne-meds/

That's oral metronidazole though, blood levels (in mom) of the drug are a lot lower using the vaginal gel, so it may be safer. I agree with calling Infant Risk tomorrow. Shouldn't be any harm delaying the treatment until then.

Excellent point. Topical should be much less of an issue than oral use.
Coolest thing my big girl said recently: "How can you tell the world is moving when you are standing on it?"
Coolest thing my little girl sang recently: "I love dat one-two pupples!"
