Default milk of magnesia? is it safe?

Is it safe for me to drink milk of magnesia while breastfeeding?? I just don't know what to do always feel constipated.. I feel like it would help once in a while…. Colace does nothing. I drink tons of water and eat lots of fiber. I know my prenatal vitamins make my issue worse, but I always had a problem.

According to this information from kelly mom, milk of magnesia is in the safest category for breastfeeding moms. This link is also useful in going over all the different options for constipation.

How far out are you? Does the stool softener they gave you not help?

Any way you could switch to a low-iron multivitamin instead of your usual prenatal? Prenatals tend to have a good amount of iron in them, which is often constipating for a lot of folks. I'm assuming you don't have any known issue with your own iron levels, of course!

Thanks! I am 5 months postpartum. Stool softeners do not help. I think I am going to switch to a low iron multi. Not to be gross, but I did take the milk of magnesia and now have had a stomach for days. I am worried and have contacted my dr.

I'm sorry you're still not feeling well. I hope your doctor can help.

Regarding the Milk of Magnesia (magnesium hydroxide), Dr. Hale gives it a safety rating of L1 (safest) in Medications and Mothers' Milk. In describing a study where magnesium hydroxide was given to nursing mothers, he says "No alterations in bowel habits or abnormal stools were noted in any of the breastfed infants, indicating that magnesium hydroxide exposure through breastmilk is clinically insignificant in an infant."
