Default 2 month old nurse frequent but slow weight gain

My 2 month old nurses every two hours for close to 45 minutes sometimes an hr each feed. However from her one month visit she weighed 8lbs 5oz an her two month check up she is 8lbs 12oz. The lactation lady said her latch is wrong which possibly is the reason she's sucking 5-6 times if not more before swallowing. Hence the long feedings. I'm unsure how to correct the latch. She just never opens wide. They wanted me to do about 1 1/2 oz of formula each feed which I've noticed she's happy after an she goes longer then the 2 hours. If I don't give her the formula she does 2. How do I fix this. I don't want her to work do hard to hardly get food an feel full after 45 minutes. Sunday I'm meeting the Latino specialist and going to do a weigh feed weigh. To see just how much baby gets from me.hope that helps. I don't want her to be on formula

Did you see my last response to your other thread? From what I could gather from your post it appears baby gained well in month one but not in month two. So that does not sound like a latch issue to me, unless the latch issue is new or latch has been so poor all along that your milk production has been affected?

If you are seeing a lactation consultant, and the before and after nursing weight check indicates poor transfer, she should have the training to assist you with latch and with ideas to help baby get more milk. I also suggest that you make sure your IBCLC checks for tongue tie and other physical issues.

I am going to link an article about what to expect at a lactation consultation wiht a board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) http://cwgenna.com/lconsult.html

If baby is able to latch, even if it is not a great latch, but baby is on there and it does not hurt you, but baby is having difficulty extracting milk, what about hand expressing before nursing (to trigger letdown) and/or doing breast compressions while nursing? I will link those ideas as well.

So I met with the LC an weighed the baby she was 8lbs 12oz. After 40 minutes she was 8 lbs 15 oz. I then saw her pedi the next day and is telling me she is concerned because the charts says she should weigh more. According to the LC she is only 8oz behind. Could sleeping on my stomach decrease supply?? Also the LC did day last week the latch was wrong and she believes affected my supply.

So your baby took 3 oz over the course of a 40 minute feeding- that's a totally normal, totally adequate feeding for a breastfed baby. Most breastfed babies take 2-4 oz at a time, and feed around 8-12 times a day. (8 is usually the bare minimum.). That means that most breastfed babies take in 20-30 oz of milk per day. As long as you're feeding at least 8 times a day and the baby's intake is around 2-4 oz each time, she should have no trouble getting her needs met.

Stomach sleeping can be a problem for some moms, but if your baby can extract 3 oz at a time it's unlikely that you have a supply problem.

Can you posts a complete weight hisotry for your baby? That could really help us figure out if the pediatrician and LC are on track about the baby's weight, or if this is all a lot of worry over nothing.

I don't have the dates off hand. But she was born August 4. Weighing 7lbs 7oz. We were discharged on Tuesday the 6th. On the 7th at her first visit to the pedi she was 6lbs 12oz. (My milk still hasn't come in ) the pedi wanted me back the next day. She was 6lbs 11oz. A week later she weighed 7lbs 4oz. Then at her one month on September 8th she weighed 8lbs 5oz. Then October 10th she weighed 8lbs 12oz. BTW!!! I went to the LC today and she said she has a Prominet Frenulum. So she said the latch looks great there's no other way to fix it. So she is contacting her pedi tomorrow to ask about sending her to an ears nose and throat doctor. An see where we go from there
