Default Painful nipples after nursing 21 month old

This seems very strange to me, but now after all these months nursing, I have pain in my nipples (especially after nursing). A lot of the info online that I find is for very young babies, so I thought I would ask you all. My nipples look somewhat normal, with the exception being that at the base of the nipple (on the bottom) is a few shades darker and (sorry TMI) a little crusty. Anyone have a clue? Thanks in advance.

    Not pregnant, right?

Skin changes in the nipple area that occur with pain and in a mom who has been nursing pain-free for many months- they always make me think that there's something infectious there. Thrush, maybe bacteria.

Agree with mommal. Also, look at your child's latch and positioning and adjust those if needed. As baby gets bigger positioning often needs to be adjusted so baby does not tuck his or her chin, and latch often gets "off" for several reasons.

Thanks for your thoughts! I'm pretty sure after talking to the doc that it's thrush. For a few days, I chalked it up to latching problems because she had a stuffy nose, teething, etc. However, it's gotten a bit "funkier" and i'm pretty certain that it's thrush. Thanks again!

Sorry, mama! Thrush is nasty. Hope you can get it banished ASAP!
