Question Tips and Tricks for Shallow Latch?

What are some ways to get baby to open mouth nice and wide? I've tried when DD is starving, before she's starving, I've tried "teasing" w/ the nipple and she still won't open wide. I've tried smashing the boob and shoving in there and she manages to push it out and re-latch how SHE wants to be, even with head support to minimize movement. I'm waiting on a reply from a LLL leader and might have to get assessed by a "pro" but in the mean time, looking for additional input.

I had a similar issue with my little one not wanting to open wide. The lactation consultant in the hospital told me to let her latch and then gently pull her chin down until her jaw releases causing her mouth to open wider. It took some time (and discomfort), but eventually she started doing it on her own. Hope this helps.

Good tip from lonemagnolia. You can try gently pushing more of your breast into baby’s mouth after baby latches. Also try laid back nursing which often helps baby get a better latch. A wide gape is not always needed for a comfortable latch. If nursing does not hurt and baby is getting milk it is a good latch.

here are my favorite latch info links

Laid back position aka nursing “uphill” http://www.llli.org/docs/00000000000...astfeeding.pdf

Here are two simple pictorials, you want the one on latch. Notice that the mother is in a “slightly” laid back position, looks like on a couch? This is a very “adjustable” position, play around to find how you and your baby are most comfortable. The other one is on tongue tie http://cwgenna.com/quickhelp.html

latch and 'Breast sandwich' article http://www.llli.org/llleaderweb/lv/lvfebmar04p3.html (probably only needed if baby cannot latch or latch is hurting mom)
