Default Nursing beyond 12mo--a few questions

    Hi mamas,

Still trying to navigate my nursing relationship with LO beyond 12mo. It's like a whole new world! Just when I felt SO in sync now it's all changing again!

Here's our current rhythm (LO is exactly 12mo btw) :
Nurse AM, afternoons, PM and weekends on demand
LO sleeps through the night mostly, with 1 night nursing around 3AM
With nanny during day: 2X 3oz bottle breast milk, 1 sippy cup of water or yogurt drink or almond milk
He is great with solids and eats a ton!

    Here are my questions:
    1. Should I be eliminating bottles all together? I read here that after 12mo you should move away from bottles? What if he's still drinking breastmilk? Should it just go in a cup?
    2. Do you still need a BM stash if you aren't pumping anymore? For instance, since I still nurse at night, should I still keep a frozen stash for overnight visits with the grandparents etc or can he just have regular milk when I'm not around?

I think that's all for now... I don't know what I'd do without you all as a sounding board! Many thanks!

Hi amy, congrats on nursing your LO to a year! That's great!

    1. At 12 months you can start transitioning from bottles to a cup. And yes, perfectly fine to put the breastmilk in a cup! That's what I do.
    2. You don't need a BM stash, and it's fine to give cow's milk (or whatever milk you're using), but it can be nice to have a little breastmilk on hand for separations. I really think you can go either way on that. My DH seems to find it useful to give breastmilk when he's trying to put LO to bed if I'm out for a work event or traveling, but if we didn't happen to have it, I wouldn't stress out about providing it.

I just want to add that a lot of kids still take bottles into their second year. If you can't break the bottle habit immediately, don't worry. You won't be the only mom in that situation.

I wouldn't stress about pulling the bottle. I personally never wanted my kids to have anything other than breastmilk in bottles, so as soon as the frozen stash was gone, we ditched the bottles. We kind of phased them out while phasing in cups of cows milk. BUT - my 2.5 year old is still nursing, and I'm sure that kids get similar comfort from bottles/pacifiers as they do from nursing. I think doctors are a bit militant about cutting out the bottle at age one.
