Default Tight Feeling of the Nipple

Hello, I am new to LLL and a new mother of a 5 week old, Andrew. I am mainly breast feeding with a little bit of formula supplement. Very frequently when it is time to breastfeed my baby I get this feeling in both my nipples like they are tightening up just at the very tips of the nipples. It usually lasts for only a few seconds but I have never heard anyone else speak of this feeling, and I don't think it has to do with engorgement. But I am curious as to what this occourence is and if it has a name and what it's all about. Does anyone know? Thank you.

hi there and welcome to the forum! congratulations on your LO!

it sounds like you may be describing the letdown of your milk at the beginning of a nursing session. letdown feels very different for every woman...some women don't even feel a letdown.

here's a recent thread about letdown...

But, is it really letdown if it happens when the baby isn't nursing, and no milk comes out?
