Unhappy Sore Nipples/ baby wont stop eating

First of all, Sorry this is so long!!!

I have been nursing since day 1. My nipples have been very sore! James will be two months old next weekend. I have been checked by a lactation consultant for correct positioning/latch/sucking twice now and for thrush. My nipples are still really sore. I do reattach when they start hurting, but by the time we go to bed they hurt no matter what . My baby eats for about 15min on each breast then takes a 3-5hr nap in the morning (he also eats every 4hrs at night), then wants to eat the rest of the afternoon. I live in AZ so its very hot and I wonder if part of it is that hes thirsty and just needs a drink due to the dry heat! He will eat almost non stop (he'll take a 10-15min break every once in a while) from about 3pm till bed time. I have a feeling hes using me as a pacifier but i cant tell the difference if he is sucking differently. He weighed 7lbs when we left the hospital and now weighs 9lbs 6oz. He does have 6-8 peed diapers and 1-3 poopy each day. So I am not concerned about weight gain/him getting enough milk at this time.

I am wondering how long a baby should eat? and if you have any advice as to how to make my nipples stop hurting!??

    Thanks!

I think that by 2 months, it shouldn't hurt no matter how long/often your baby nurses. A couple of things come to mind:
1)You may have thrush, even though the baby doesn't have symptoms. Did you have antibiotics with your delivery, or have you had a vaginal yeast infection/baby had a diaper rash? There are some things you can try at home to treat it, maybe see if they start to make a difference and then you'd know what you're dealing with. Check out Dr. Newman's thrush page http://www.breastfeedinginc.ca/conte...agename=doc-CP and Dr. Jay Gordon's http://drjaygordon.com/breastfeeding/thrush.html to see if the symptoms match yours. Probiotics for you and baby are a good place to start in terms of treatment.

    2) Has your baby been checked for tongue tie/upper lip tie? Posterior tongue ties are a little trickier to spot, and IME, are more often missed than anterior ones. Upper lip ties can also cause latch issues. Here's a couple of good sites to see pics of these http://www.kiddsteeth.com/articles.html and http://thefunnyshapedwoman.blogspot....-frenulum.html

    3) Oversupply - sometimes a lot of milk can cause baby to clamp down to slow the flow. Not sure if this is maybe what's going on here? If so, reclined nursing can help.

As for how to make your nipples stop hurting, it's a good idea to air them out as much as possible, and if you can get a script for Dr. Newman's all purpose nipple cream (it's in the thrush protocol) it can really help.

I agree with carm3. Nipple pain is due to a poor latch or some other issue as she has suggested, NOT because baby nurses a long time. I know you were checked but you might need to see someone else. We are designed to be able to pacify babies on the breast! Nipple pain means something is not right.

I know you are gearing up for a big move. But I do suggest taking time to get this figured out as soon as you can!

    with the PPs.

I just want to point out that cluster feeding in the late afternoon-evening is 100% normal. Often it's baby's way of tanking up for a longer stretch of sleep. This link explains more: http://kellymom.com/parenting/parent...fussy-evening/
Coolest thing my big girl said recently: "How can you tell the world is moving when you are standing on it?"
Coolest thing my little girl sang recently: "I love dat one-two pupples!"

Thank you for your reply... I think I may have thrush.. I have all symptoms but my baby has none.. Im calling my Dr on Monday...
I looked at the pics... my baby can stick his tongue all the way out and lifts it up sometimes where i can see... it looks nothing like tongue tie and I looked at his upper lip as well... If I continue to have pain, I will make sure that gets checked.

Thank you for that! Ive been thinking it might be just my babies normal, but so many people tell me he should only be eating every 2-4hrs so i thought i was doing something wrong by feeding him so often at night.

My problem is that they just hurt constantly but get worse about 5min into a feeding and i have shooting pains while feeding ... I was almost all the way better at one month but then things just started getting worse, so im leaning towards it probably being thrush...

Yeah, I'd say thrush sounds pretty likely, especially if you had a period of pain free (or almost so) nursing. Is there any way you could start yourself on some probiotics now (and give some to baby too) and maybe some GSE while you're waiting to see the doc?

Where could I get probiotics/gse? Is gse safe for babies? I thought that was used to remove parasites..

Grapefruit seed extract is an antimicrobial that is recommended by both Dr. Newman and Dr. Gordon for application to nipples with thrush (diluted though), and Dr. Gordon says you can use the diluted solution in the baby's mouth. I used it with my LO when she was about 3 months old, and though she made a face when I swabbed it in her mouth, it was otherwise fine. Just follow the directions in the links above

I got both the GSE and the probiotics at a health/supplement store. I guess it depends on where you are as to what's available, but I'm sure you could find it online. I did order baby probiotics (hmf natogen), but you can just use an adult capsule - break it open, put the powder on your finger/nipple and give to baby.
