Question Milk running out babies nose while feeding

    Hi,

I EBF my 4 month old and he's had slow weight gain the whole time. What I'm starting to get concerned about is that he routinely leaks milk out his nose while eating. Sometimes its running out and pools on my lap. Clearly this is loss calories for my little guy! Any ideas? My ped acted like it was the strangest thing she'd ever heard and suggested I see an ENT.

    Thanks!

hmm, having a child with a cleft palate, it sounds all too familiar. I am not saying yours has a cleft palate, cause he prob wouldn't be able to nurse at all. Maybe a fistula? Maybe a sub mucosa cleft (the tissue is there, all LOOKS normal, but there is nothing behind the tissue).

But I agree a specialist is in order. ENT probably, maybe one can watch you nurse him and see just how much comes out.

    good luck!

    Time to see the specialist.

I think I have read that milk running from the nose can be caused by laryngomalacia, which is basically a floppy larynx. It's another possibility the ENT might be able to rule out.

Is it new, or has it always happened? Does it help to nurse him in a more upright position?

I'd also agree with the recommendation to see an ENT. It doesn't sound like it's necessarily anything alarming, but it's not really typical either. Did your ped give you a referral or a list of ENTs you could contact?

Thanks for the replies! The ped says his palate looks great, but of course she's so specialist. He doesn't ALWAYS do this milk running out the nose trick. But lately he's been doing it a lot. I normally feed him lying across my lap on the boppy. Sometimes I feed him in the carrier (a beco gemini) and he never leaks milk out the nose then. Perhaps this is positional?

Position would definitely impact the likelihood of milk coming out baby's nose. Gravity is great at keeping milk going down where it belongs.

I had this problem until my LO was about six weeks old and the IBCLC I saw said it was a result of a poor latch and oversupply. Basically my milk was flowing faster than baby could swallow it down and her poor latch meant she couldn't stop the flow either so it would drain out her nose! My midwife also said that babies have short eustachian tubes which contributes to the problem.

For me the problem has resolved itself as LO got older, my supply regulated and her latch improved.

So this has been happing less lately, but I made an appointment with an ENT anyways. I think sometimes my guy might just be over-eager and can't keep up with the swallowing. Oh babies. Thanks for the responses!
