    Default Sleepy baby

    Hello All

I have a sleepy 5 week old baby that is not gaining enough weight and the Dr wants him feeding every 3 hours. However I cant get him to wake or stay awake for him to feed. The Lactation consultant also wants him up and feeding to keep up my milk supply. I am pumping while he sleeps and sometimes it feels he wakes as soon as he hears the pump stop. My question or what I am looking for help with is a) should I wake him and B) how do I keep him awake?

    Thank you
    Allison

Does baby ever wake on his own and cue to nurse? If so, about how many times a 24 hour day?

It is important in the early weeks to nurse quite frequently-at least 10 times a day. But when we get it into our heads that it has to be every such and such hours, that can trip us up, as we can get out of sync with baby. Babies this age typically 'cluster nurse' -nurse very frequently for some time-more than once an hour, even, and then take a longer sleep stretch. So I am wondering, if you could encourage baby to nurse more frequently when he is awake, and get frequency up that way?

If not, or if that does not increase nursing frequency enough, then yes it is appropriate to wake baby to nurse. Some babies also can be encouraged to nurse in their sleep.

Are you pumping because baby is not nursing enough-and are you feeding baby that expressed milk? If baby wakes up right after you have pumped, do you nurse at that point?

Are you swaddling baby, or using a pacifier?
here are tips for waking baby. is this what you needed, or does baby wake and start to nurse but then fall asleep immediately?
