    Default Please help! Newborn weak sucking, not sure if he is feeding

    Hi;
    Would really appreciate some help and advice!
    My 10 day old has had a rocky start as he was diagnosed with jaundice on day 3 and as a result was too weak and sleepy to feed properly. We were readmitted back into hospital on day 4 and the midwives helped me to pump so that we could get baby into a routine of regular feeding. Luckily I had lots of breast milk. His blood sugar was really low when we first went in, but as he started to drink my expressed breast milk, it increased.
    Over the next day, my baby started to latch on to the breast and feed well, and the staff were happy to let me go home.
    When the midwife came to visit me a few days ago, my baby had put on weight and she was happy.
    However, over the past few days I have become very worried again as baby falls asleep shortly after being put on the breast, I am constantly trying to wake him up to feed but his sucking seems a bit feeble to me and not vigorous. Also, he feeds for over an hour at a time, but not much of that time is active sucking.
    I| feel really worried that he is not getting enough. He is still producing 5-6 wet nappies and 3+ dirty nappies per day.
    Any advice hugely appreciated, thank you xx

    that sounds like ok output. how big are the poops, what color? how many times in 24 hours does baby nurse? if you are really worried can you have baby weighed again on the same scale as the last weight check?

    have you tried breast compressions or anything else to encourage more active sucking? I used to gently jiggle my sons chin and that would get him 'revved up' again...

    I know it's particularly scary due to that rough start but a newborn being quite sleepy and taking a long time to nurse is not all that unusual and not a problem unless baby is not gaining appropriately.

    these may help?

    Thank you for the advice!
    Poops are kind of mustard yellow and the size of a 50p coin maybe
    He is feeding every 2-3 hours in the day and 3-4 at night, but I often have to wake him for feeds during the daytime as he is so sleepy.
    At night he gets a lot more agitated between feeds and cries piercingly, thrusting himself at my chest and rooting around frantically.

    Are you scheduling his feeds? trying to go a certain amount of time in between them at all? If you are, I suggest, don't. Try nursing at the earliest cues to reduce that frantic rooting, which is totally normal but can be upsetting for both mom and baby. It can be helpful to think about how often baby is nursing overall throughout the day (at least 10 times per 24 hours at this age-more often is fine) rather than about the amount of time in between feeds. At this age, baby wanting to nurse every hour could be perfectly normal.

    poop size and color sounds good. Assuming a 50p coin is about the size of a us 50 cent?
