    Unhappy Pain with breastfeeding-HELP!

I'm currently trying to breastfeed my 4 day old baby and having pain during feedings. This is my second time breastfeeding. I know that I am having issues with him latching on. I'm pretty sure that I can't get him to take as much of the breast as he needs to. I delivered on Friday evening. The lactation consultant at the hospital was off all weekend and isn't back for another week due to Christmas! When I voice my concerns to other nurses at the hospital I delivered at they watch my baby eat and say everything looks good. Because I have breastfed in the past I know it isn't supposed to hurt like this, but for the life of me can't figure out how to get the baby to take more of my breast.....PLEASE HELP!!!! I can't wait until the lactation consultant comes back next week!

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the new baby!

An experienced breastfeeding mom should be given creedence when she says it hurts more than it should. I wish the LC was there to help you. I would immediately start making calls for hands-on help- and I know it may be hard to find someone over the Christmas holiday! I'd call your local La Leche League leaders, your local lactation consultants (starting with the ones who are IBCLCs), and the pediatrician. Make sure the baby is checked carefully for tongue tie, since tongue tie can explain how everything can look okay on the outside yet cause pain on the inside. I would also google "breast sandwich" or "nipple sandwich" for descriptions of a technique which can help you cram the maximum amount of breast into a tiny newborn mouth.

Can you describe the pain exactly? Is it a pinching, or more of a burning? And when your nipple emerges from the baby's mouth, is it symmetrical, like a pencil eraser, or asymmetrical/wedged/creased/ridged/shaped like a new lipstick? Any cracking or blistering at this point? How about nipple blanching (turning white) after feedings?

I agree with mommal, if you can, get hands on help asap. Are you still in the hospital? even if you are, I have visited moms in the hospital and a private practice IBCLC may be able to as well, with your permission. Don't think you cannot call someone due to the holiday. Breastfeeding helpers understand that babies are born and thus help is needed 365 days a year. If they are not able to talk, they will either not answer the phone or just tell you. You never know, someone may be available.

Mommal has good questions. Your answers may help narrow down what is going on.
