Thread: nipple shield and nipple soreness

Post nipple shield and nipple soreness

I have a 3 week old who has been nursing wonderfully. One of my nipples is flat and the lactation consultant at the hospital recommended a nipple shield to help on that side. He now won't accept my other nipple without the nipple shield and my nipples are cracking horribly (like open wounds on both nipples). Good news he is gaining weight well and seems to be getting enough milk. But how do I get him off the nipple shield and take care of my nipples?

This is a good link on weaning from the shield: http://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/child/wean-shield/

This one covers what to do about cracks: http://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/nipplehealing/

I suggest seeing the LC again. Cracks could mean thrush, they could mean bacterial infection, they could mean that the baby's latch is even more difficult than previously thought. Hands-on, in person help is best when you have cracks.
Coolest thing my big girl said recently: "How can you tell the world is moving when you are standing on it?"
Coolest thing my little girl sang recently: "I love dat one-two pupples!"
